Pit Firing and Tool Making Workshop - with Sam Lopez
Sunday, November 3 and Sunday, November 17
This two-day workshop with Sam Lopez (https://www.slopstudios.com/ @slopstudios) is a great opportunity for participants to learn how to safely fire their work independently while achieving interesting and unique surfaces that can only be achieved through contact with fire.
Students will learn:
-How to prep their work for a successful pit fire
-How to mix and apply Terra Sigillata
-How to safely stack, fire, and excavate work from the pit
-A variety of surface treatments post-firing including applying horsehair and sprinkling sugar for desire result
In addition to the pit firing, Sam will demonstrate how to make a selection of handmade trimming tools, ribs, and knives from affordable materials found at the hardware store.
Students will bring completed stiff/leather/bone dry work by the first decorating day.
This two-day workshop will take place Sunday 11/3, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. (decorating leather hard greenware and tool making) and Sunday 11/17, from 8 a.m. - 1 ish p.m. (pit fire at the beach).
